Murdoch Square: EOI for Public Art Commissions
September 8, 2022
Hesperia’s Murdoch Square is set to become one of State’s most prominent community precincts, located in the heart of the Murdoch town centre.
Bringing together health, commercial and retail in a central location, Murdoch Square is projected to be the largest employment hub outside of the Perth CBD.
To assist in bringing this vibrant hub of activity to life, Hesperia is seeking Expressions of Interest from Australian artists for public art commissions at Murdoch Square. The series of commissioned works are to be designed to reflect the values and intent of the project and contribute to public amenity.
Public art forms a crucial aspect of Hesperia’s vision to ‘unlock potential in place.’ Art contributes to place through unique interpretations, promoting social engagement,
harmony, a sense of community and supporting sustainable development through creative endeavour.
Comprehensive briefs have been designed to guide the creative processes and ensure artworks are curated with a site-specific approach. Artists have been tasked with developing concepts that recognise that the experiences and knowledge of a multicultural world are fundamental to a healthy society. Additionally, artists must consider that approaches to holistic health are found by linking the physical to the emotional; the cultural to the cognitive.
Murdoch Square has been designed in such a way that not only enables but encourages foot traffic throughout the site. The commissioned pieces are situated in key locations to support and develop these pathways throughout the precinct, as well as creating moments of interactivity. Works will serve as a connection to diverse user groups, with careful consideration of existing storylines and representation of cultural diversity required in each piece.
Hesperia’s public art strategy is designed to enhance spaces with artwork that creates points of interest and enjoyment.
