Breaking ground at historic Montario Quarter site in Shenton Park

Construction is underway at Montario Quarter in Shenton Park, where Hesperia will deliver a reimagining of the heritage-listed Victoria House as residential apartments.
The site of the former Shenton Park hospital, Montario Quarter will comprise apartments, houses and parklands centred on a village shopping precinct.
Upon completion, Montario Quarter will establish a new benchmark for urban redevelopment within the Perth Metropolitan area, offering an of how underutilised urban spaces can be transformed to provide housing and lifestyle options for Perth’s growing population.
LandCorp recently announced today an improvement scheme to guide development at the site and deliver built form outcomes suited to the unique natural and historic features of the area.
“The improvement scheme is based on values the community outlined through extensive stakeholder engagement, including a formal public comment period which took place earlier in the year,” LandCorp chief executive Frank Marra said.
“As a result, public open space will form a key part of Montario Quarter, with more than 25 per cent of the estate earmarked for features including an urban orchard, playground and exercise equipment, a nature-play area, grassed spaces and retained bushland.”
Mr Marra said the design and community focus of Montario Quarter also reflected the historical significance of the site and its importance to Western Australians.
“The recent name unveiling of the development ‘Montario Quarter’ recognises the history of the site and pays tribute to Sir George Montario Bedbrook – a former surgeon at Shenton Park Rehabilitation Hospital, and pioneer in the treatment and rehabilitation of patients with paraplegia.”
Hesperia’s Victoria House project will comprise the redevelopment of Victoria House and three new buildings – Ochre, Umber and Siena – offering 80 one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments.
The Victoria House project team includes MJA Studio, FINESPUN, Palassis Architects, Place Laboratory and PACT Construction.
